Bearings help reduce friction. They allow moving parts to run smoother by having two surfaces roll over each other reducing the friction between the two objects. There are two main bearing categories. Radial bearings which are designed to support forces perpendicular to the direction of the shaft, or radial loads and thrust bearings which support forces that are parallel to the direction of the shaft, or axial load.
